Finding Your Anchor in the Shifting Tide

Finding Your Anchor in the Shifting Tide

There is a specific feeling that comes when you stand at the edge of the ocean right where the water meets the sand. As the wave pulls back toward the deep it feels like the ground is being sucked out from under your feet. If you stare at it long enough you start to lose your balance even though you are standing on solid earth.

Life has a funny way of feeling like that lately. We are constantly pulled by notifications and demands and the heavy weight of the world news until we feel untethered. It is easy to feel like you are just drifting through your week instead of actually living it.

When I started Be the Light Co I wanted to create things that acted as physical reminders to stay put. My coastal art is handmade with the intention of bringing that ocean stillness into your home and our shirts are meant to be a soft uniform for your healing journey. But more than the products I want to share the practice of staying grounded when the tide gets high.

Grounding is essentially the art of dropping your anchor. It is a way to tell your nervous system that despite how fast the world is moving you are safe right here.

One of my favorite ways to do this is what I call the Blue Space Reset. Since my heart is always at the coast I use the color of the water to bring me back. If you feel your thoughts starting to spiral take a second to look around and find three blue things in your immediate surroundings. It could be a coffee mug or a piece of art on your wall or even the sky outside your window. Focusing on those physical objects forces your brain to quit worrying about the future and start noticing the present.

This weekend I want to challenge you to be your own anchor. You do not have to be productive or perfect or even particularly happy. You just have to be here. Take a walk and feel the actual texture of the ground under your shoes. Notice the way the air feels on your skin.

Remember that the pier stays standing because it is rooted deep beneath the surface. You can weather any storm as long as you know how to find your center.

If you need a little help finding that peace come hang out with me on the blog or browse the new coastal collection. Each piece is a little piece of my own grounding practice shared with you.

Stay steady and keep being the light.
